Default check the sentence, please

Hi, I am writing the essay "Teaching children values". Could you please check the sentence:

Values are the core of building a person with appealing character traits, a person who will do the right thing and make the right choice, even when people’s lives and fates are at stake or when nobody is watching him.

Does it sound English? I need your advice. Thank you.

As an English speaker, I might say "values lie at the core of..........." but I don't see much wrong with the sentence as it stands.
