English is not my first language, and even though I've had a great education as a Medical Doctor I would like to know more about origins of various common expressions. It may sound silly, but I want to learn where the phrase "light a match" comes from in a context of bad odor.
You'll find many etymology sites here: http://www.usingenglish.com/links/Et...y_and_History/
I think the idea of lighting a match is that it will burn off certain gases that cause bad smells.![]()
Thank you for the prompt response. I suspected it was the case, but was not sure.
