It would sound odd to me without the "for."
Dear teachers
I saw this on a news website:
One England fan looks to be in the doghouse with his partner when he gets back from the Ukraine after a banner was hung over a bridge declaring: 'I hope the quarter finals are worth missing our anniversary for. - Don't rush back!'
The particle 'for' caught my attention. In my opinion it's not necessary.
Any comment will be very much appreciated!

It's required.
What are you missing our anniversary for?
For what reason are you missing our anniversary?
I am missing our anniversary for the quarter-finals of the football.
Well, I hope the quarter-finals are worth missing our anniversary for.
If I were the man that the sign was aimed at, I don't think I would bother going home!![]()
