the word for the exam

Dear teachers,

When a student take a course he will take part for the exam of that course. When he fails he will be given another chance to take up in another exam for the same course which is translated as 'make-up' exam, I don't know whether it is the correct expression for it. If he fails again he had to take the same course for a term and then take the third exam. Could you please tell me what is the expression for the third exam?

In BrE, we call them 'retakes'. I don't know of a special term for a second opportunity to retake.

Thank you so much for your help. Maybe I didn't explain it clearly.

In China when a student takes a course he take the final exam for it. If he fails he can take the 'retake' the next term and he doens't have to pay for it. If he fails again, he had to pay tuition for the course, to to classes for it and take the exam for the third time in the end of the term. What I meant was 'what is the word for the third exam'?

I'm afraid I don't know a term for that in English- I'd still say retakes. As the system doesn't exactly correspond, there isn't a term- let's see if someone else can come up with something.

I'd like to ask a relative quesiton: Is our translation make-up exam (I am sure it is what you use 'retake') correct? Or I'd better change it to 'retake'?

The term, in North America, is 'make-up' exam. But such exams are rare and, moreover, based on health issues or other extenuating circumstances, none of which is having failed the exam.

There isn't a term. If you fail the final exam, and that exam is worth more than 40% of your grade, you pretty much fail the course and have to take the course over again, a second time around. The exam for that course is called "the final (exam)".
