needs an "a" or not ?
Should there be an "a" in front of the word "part" in :
“This island is not a part of Micronesia”?
I was told that “a” should not be there unless the word “part” is preceded
by an adjective. E.g. This island is not a significant part of the group.
Thanks.

You can say “This island is not a part of Micronesia” or “This island is not part of Micronesia” either one.

Either 'a part' or 'part' is OK as pointed out.
'part', however, is best in terms of clarity: 'a part' implies an omitted adjective.
:D
