Here is the question: What does the underlined part mean in the following sentence:
The Twelfth Dynasty armies of 1900 BC stepped off by the left and so has every army down to the present day.

...this could mean that the armies supported the Western Revolutional epoch of the reference time...since the WEST is on the left side of the compass...
this is just my opinion...

It's much simpler than that. When a soldier hears the order 'quick march' he always starts by putting his left foot forward first. Hence the order,' By the left quick march'.

Then starting off by the left,in the military context,should mean doing things in a militarily conventional way...
