In my country, the university registration process looks like a football match between clerks, where we are the ball.

Not knowing what to do, I telephoned Robin. = I did not know what to do, so I telephoned Robin.

The sky darkened. Darkened is being used as a verb. The emphasis is on the change in the sky from one thing to another.
The sky is darkened. Darkened is being used as an adjective. It's focusing only on the sky as it is now.
