Have you heard this expression? is this English?

The reason I'm asking questions like this is I'm thinking of translating a video game - not really as a project or anything but just for fun, because I like this game a lot. I know what the phrase means, but I want to see if it makes sense to regular native English users.

If the ship has already left, you've missed the boat (your chance). That's how I'd understand it.
