Default do or verb to be

I was listening to a song and it was a rap song from a student,anyway....
    The part went like this:
Are you carrying a weapon on you,I've heard a lot of you are.
My question is this,if I were to say 'do' instead of 'are',would I be wrong?
    If so,why?

    Thanks,
    Mike

    Yes
    If so,why?
    Are you carrying? Present progressive.
    Do you carry? Present simple.

In that context, "are" = at the moment/"do" = as routine.
