Question gerunds

Hello everyone,
Is the underlined word planning in the following sentence a gerund?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
They are sure the extra planning will make the difference in the end.
Thank-you

If you believe that the "gerund" is a valid grammatical concept in English,* then "planning" is indeed a gerund.

"Planning" is of course a noun here.

* I'm not convinced.
