How is "ei" in either pronounced in American English?
I've heard two alternatives: Like "I" or like the beginning of "eagle"
Is there a difference between American English and British English?
Thanks!
It's not a national difference- you'll hear both used in the UK- it depends on region and preference.![]()
Thank you!
According to some polls (the one on Longman Pronunciation Dictionary for example) the pronunciation /aID@/ is slightly favoured in the UK and the pronunciation /iD@r/ is slightly favoured in the US. I'm using IPA ASCII symbols here.
Rogusx, they don't seem to be displaying on my machine. I've used http://users.otenet.gr/~petermac/call/pron/type.html and it has worked.
/ʧʤaʊəʊɔɪʊəɪəu:ʊɜ:æʌθð/
It uses unicode, so I'm just testing as I have a new machine.
Thank you very much for that link. What I was using were not the actual IPA symbols but an adaptation of regular letters used by some people on the internet an e-mail. An explanation of this system can be found here:

Of course, it's preferable to use the actual IPA symbols, so using those, the LPD shows the pronunciation /'aɪðə/ to be slightly more frequent in RP, with /'i:ðə/ (with the r-coloured schwa) more frequent in GA. Thanks again for the useful link.
You're welcome- it is a handy utility.![]()
