Well,I honestly don't think this has anything to do with either the AME or BRE.The two words,though somewhat similar,have clearing different meaning and usage.While "farther" shows physical distance(which can be measured in miles or kilometers) "further" betokens metaphoric or figurative distance (which cannot be measured in either miles or kilomteres)...Here are some examples...
"The journey to his house was farther than I had anticipated"...(physical distance....20/30/40 kilometers
"Could you please explain further?I don't seem to understand the topic"...Yes,the explanation would suggest a "progression" but it is not physical...neither does it require physical movement....
