He asked me that I should hand in my assignment by 5 pm.
1. He asked that I should hand in my assignment by 5 pm.
2. The general commanded that the troops should withdraw.
We teach Korean student that such verbs like 'suggest, propose, recommend, advise, demand, ask
require, request, order command' are followed by that-clause usually includes 'should infinitive'.
However this morning I came across the following on the BBC web site;
"advise/ask/command/instruct/request/require/warn
Note that these reporting verbs do not require should or a that-clause and are normally used instead with a simple infinitive. The issue of whether to use the subjunctive or not with these verbs does not then arise.
Consider the following:
- Her mother advised them to be home by ten o’ clock.
- They required me to clean the house every Saturday.
- You asked me to let you know how much it would cost.
- I warned him not to swim where there were dangerous currents.
Then, sentence 1 and 2 are wrong and should be avoided?

Then sentences 1 and 2 are wrong and should be avoided? Yes.
1. He asked me to hand in my assignment by 5 pm.
2. The general commanded the troops to withdraw.

(Not a Teacher)
I can't hear myself ever saying 1 or 2.
"He asked that I hand in my assignment by 5 PM."
"The general commanded that the troops withdraw."
