Can I rewrite the above sentence as follows:
By 1915, film studios began to produce cartoons series.
Is there any difference in meaning between them?

Do you mean that it isn't wrong with "cartoons series"?I would write "cartoon series" not "cartoons series".
At first I think that "caroon" here is as an adjective therefore it must be "cartoon" not "cartoons" but I am not sure.
