They would say the same thing. Also, the way you challenged Martin is not polite- it suggests that his answer is worthless. Please do not do this again. They are not the only people capable of saying whether something was in the past or not.
PS The should have sentence does not mean the same as You had better unplug the toaster before you clean it.
