probably or certainly
The first time I watched the company perform, I had a dream of being one of their dancers. Over time, I was exposed to more, my interests in the world of dance _________ varied but that dream of someday becoming a dancer in the company never left me.
A. certainly B. probably
The answer given is B, but why is Answer A wrong?
Is it because "probably" is often used to talk about a future possibility?
Thanks for your help!

"Probably" is wrong. The speaker would know if their interests varied or not, so "certainly" is the only possible choice.

This is one of the rare occasions when I do not agree with Raymott (or the people who liked his post). I think that it's possible for the writer to realise, after the time in question, that his/her interests, despite his/her feeling at the time, did vary. I think that both answers are possible.
