Default when I've found out what was the matter

In Oedipus the King, translated by David Grene, a line:

Jocasta: Yes, when I've found out what was the matter.

Should it be rewritten as what the matter was?
I am studying at university in Hong Kong and major in English.

No, although it would sound more natural that way. Grene's translation is not wrong.
