Unhappy correct answer

1. He asked which was the correct answer.
2. He asked which the correct answer was.

My Dear Teachers

I ask for correct answer.
Which above sentence is correct? It is better to explain it in grammatical terms.

2 is correct- it's an indirect question because you are tellling me about the question and don't expect me to answer it.

Number 1 is also correct (and is also an indirect question).

Hi,
I've read somewhere that with the copular be both ways are OK.
