Verb

Hi, can anyone help answer my question, if so that would be great.

My question is if a noun is a person, place, or thing, and a verb is not a thing, then why is it that we explain a verb as telling an action. In the dictionary action is referred to as a thing/noun. This seems to say that a verb tells an action which is a thing. I though verbs and nouns were totally seperate. I thought a noun is a thing and a verb tells what to do.

They are different- nouns are the names of the things, concepts, etc. Verbs are used to describe an action or state, and give us information about it, like whether the action was in the past.
