Doubt about statement
Hello; Could anyone differentiate these sentences below?
1- Whereas it was factual in content, the televised biography of Queen Elizabeth I did not seem credible.
2- Despite its factual content, the televised biography of Queen Elizabeth I did not seem credible.

They mean more or less the same self-contradictory thing.
