Can the phrasal verb come to (meaning: result in) be used with a gerund?






Example: The two men started arguing but they soon CAME TO fighting in earnest.

(Not a Teacher)

It makes sense to me, so I'd say the answer is yes.

The sentence is fine, but I don't think that 'came to' means 'resulted in'. It's more like 'reached a situation of'.
