    He is barely/almost 18 years old.
    He barely/almost passed the exam.
    Do barely and almost have the same meaning in the above examples?

    No! If he's barely 18, he's 18. If he's almost 18, he's 17.
    If he barely passed the exam, he just scraped through (He passed).
