Is the following sentence grammatically correct?

"Here’s what we’re hearing is the state of play amongst some very interested parties."

This is from an article in the Washington Post of Dec. 8 regarding Ms. Rice as possible new Secretary of State. It seems to me there is something missing in the tentence.

It's not elegant, but it's correct enough, I think. I'd prefer, "Here's what we're hearing the state of play to be amongst ..."

Here are some more examples:
"Here's what I heard was the assignment."
"This is what I heard the assignment was."
"Here's what he told me the assignment was."
"This is what he told me was the assignment we had to do."
