Default What auxiliary verbs should i use "IF" include in a sentence

when a sentence has "IF", what auxiliary verbs should i use?

for an example: if i were you, i would not go out.

how about if i translate it to " if i am you, i will not go out."

either or neither the sentences correct?

You're not me, so 'If I am you' is incorrect. Yopu cannot be me, but you can imagine being me. The form 'If I were you' shows that you are imagining something.
