When it was written, it was very natural, high-level English.
I think a modern version, like "His reasonable, passionate, logical, and powerful arguments impressed the public" is rather lacking in comparison.
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
