Mixed water?

Hello!

This thread is about what's best to say in the following situation.

I was holding a cold water jar and offered some to my daughter. She said yes, but asked me to mix with some at normal temperature. We kept thinking: could we say that she wanted mixed water? Does it make sense to ask for mixed water?

No. If someone just said "I want mixed water" to me, I would have no idea what they wanted.

She wants her water at room temperature.

All we can say is that water in the jar you offered her was colder than she wanted. If you only mix it with some tap water, it will be cooler than it was but it won't necessarily be room temperature.

If someone asked me to mix some room temperature water into some cold water, I would have to ask them how much room temperature water they wanted me to add.

Actually, I would probably tell them to go and get their own water.

I notice you are from Brazil. On my visits there, I noticed that the Brazilians tend to mix water in this fashion. In the US, a water cooler offers refrigerated water and instant hot water. In Brazil, it is refrigerated and room temperature. I observed that most Brazilians would mix the two waters together.

One of them told me that drinking water that was too cold was not good for the body.

There's nothing intrinsically wrong with it, if you want to use this in your family. But don't expect native speakers to understand it. I do that sometimes. I like the term.

Hello Dave!

We do mix water quiet frequently. And yes... we believe that ice water is the best way to get a sore throat. One of the things we teach each other whenever going to America is to order beverages with 'little ice' or 'no ice'. I didn't know about the 'room temperature' collocation and that need made this thread possible.

I also wanted to know if 'mixed water' would make any sense for a native. It happens that my daughter speaks in EnglisDh with me sometimes and the kind of vocabulary doubts we have are not easily found in textbooks, lyrics or movie transcripts. Having found this forum was the best thing ever. I'm talking her into joining us.
