Which one is correct

No, I didn't. I was ill.

No, I didn't because I was ill.

They're both perfectly acceptable. I would simply add a second comma in the second response.

Please read this extract from the forum's Posting Guidelines, Over the top:

'Thread titles should include all or part of the word/phrase being discussed.'

Did you go to school yesterday? would have been good for this.
