    Default Three boys named Kenny

    Dear Teacher,

If there are three boys named Kenny in your class, what would you say?

    a) There are three Kennys in my class.
    b) There are three Kenny's in my class.
    c) There are three Kennies in my class.

How about if there are three girls named Jess?

    a) There are three Jesss in my class.
    b) There are three Jess's in my class.
    c) There are three Jess' in my class.
    d) There are three Jesses in my class.

I suppose you mean "What would you write?", since spoken they would all sound the same. I would write a) in the first one and d) in the second.

The drawback with using d for the second one is that Jesse is a boy's name so you could be saying that there are three boys called Jesse in your class.

Remember - correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing make posts much easier to read.

    Thank you both.

If you want to avoid the drawback you mentioned, would b or c (Jess's or Jess') be acceptable? (I think Jesss is out of question.)

    No.

You would have to write 'There are three boys [girls] called Jesse [Jess] in my class'.
