If I want to express the idea of "a man begin to learn scuba diving" using the word "student", can I write as follows?

He became a student of scuba diving at an old age.

It sounds rather strange. We don't "study scuba diving", we "learn to scuba dive". I would not try to frame it in terms of being a student.
