The is used with plural proper nouns: the United Nations, the Virgin Islands, the Finger Lakes, the Andes, the Bahamas, the Soviet Union, and so on.

Republics and Kingdoms take 'the' when the words are used.
'The Ukraine' is common becase it used to be a part of the Soviet Union rather than an independent nation and the article stayed when it became independent.
