a puzzling sentence

This sentence makes no sense at all to me. I suspect there is a typo in it.

The sentence means that there was a short period when neither the doctor or the patient talked, and that one, or both of them felt bad. Another way of saying this is that the silence between the doctor and the patient was dreadful.
