However, just like in English words are shortened, and slang, not taught in the classroom obviously was used, and it was very difficult to understand. English phrases like, "Whats up?" have actually caused some foriegn exchange students to, yes, look up. Learning the local slang is not something your going to find somewhere, your simply going to pick it up as time goes on. It becomes very easy to do this once you start to think in the language your speaking and listening to, instead of translating it back into your native language. So just give it some time, and you'll pick it up.
