    Default 1.7km2

When you say a number over 1 and less than 2, does "square meter or cubic meter or even meter" have to be plural or singular? Is it 1.7 square kilometer or kilometers?

ex)the island had grown to a size of 1.7km2

In AmE, it's kilometers, otherwise it's the same.
(I'd be happy if people just said 'kilometres', regardless of the spelling.)
