dear: Sir & madam
how to use "would" in a polite request? dictionary says it express a polite request.. i dont understand that.. could you explain more in detail please?
yeah sure it express bieng polite in questions
for example :
we say // open the door please
and with *would* // would you open the door please
///do you mind if i borrow your digital camera
///would you mind if i borrowed your digital camera
hmm in dictionary it says it express a polite request by using would. ..
im quite not understand..
Kahhong, give me that book.
This sounds a bit sharp because I don't know you.
Kahhong, would you give me that book.
Much politer- I don't know you, so I can't give orders.
If you want to ask a strnager to do something, then you will naturally try to show that you are polite because it's not the same as talking to a brother or sister or a friend. In English, we don't have a polite form of the word 'you', which many languages do, so we change the verbs to be polite. Once I get to know you, I can use other forms.
these two sentences,
Kahhong, would you give me that book?
Kahhong, Could you give me that book?
it it the same?
Would- this one is the most polite and formal.
