    There is no reason to start a second thread for the same question. What is needed is for you to put your question into some context.

    "American literature" is a very big topic. It seems like you are asking about some particular story.

    He seems to be talking about the story The Antique Ring by Nathaniel Hawthorne. Unfortunately I have never read it. Also, it seems to me that he is asking us to do his homework for him.
