Default The bed needs doing

Hello everybody,

Idiomatic expressions are problematic. My teacher said that he once used the phrase "The bed needs doing"when he was in England, and that it is completely wrong and embarassing. In fact, it is so embarassing that he refuses to tell us why and what is wrong with it. Can anyone tell me the (true) meaning of the phrase and what is wrong and what my teacher should say, please, that would be very kind of you.

There's nothing really embarrassing there. We would normally say 'the bed needs making'.
