HELP - Direct Speech

Hi there.

I am needing some help with a short story I am writing.

The story is written in first person, and I am having a fair amount of trouble with the quotation (" ") marks. I need to know when to use them and when not to use them.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Use "" whenever you are giving the actual words used. To avoid it, used indriect speech- she said that she wouldn't do it, instead of "I won't do it," she said.
