the thing about alcoholism

Please make the following in red clear for me.

I knew I wanted to get healthier. I knew I wanted to get better. But every time I would start it would only last a couple of weeks and I would revert back to drinking. I was so out of shape... And the thing about alcoholism is that it's a very lonely existence. I had to turn things around, otherwise the end result was going to be very, very bad.

Is this saying "people who are addicted to alcohol are very lonely"?
