    Default second-rowers on either side of her had

    Doesn't it have to be "could" or "did", not "had"? Is it a mistake or special meaning?

    st13)Amy, the student who was skeptical about the benefits of sitting closer to the front of class, agreed to try it once or twice...When she could not get a few important points, she found that the fellow second-rowers on either side of her had, and both were willing to help her fill the gaps in her own notes...

    She discovered that the fellow second-rowers on either side of her had got the meaning of the few important points that she had not got.
