Something to be aware of is a trend that I suspect may have something to do with Am English. In the mid-twentieth century, a British English person would say 'I am in pain' but not' I am hurting'. Today British people, especially young ones, often say they are hurting (in the sense of feeling pain) - particularly when the pain is an emotional one: 'She is still hurting since the break-up'.
