The noun 'literature' comes from Latin littera , meaning letter.
Literature is written works, especially of a particular country (e.g. American Literature), a time in history (e.g. 18th Century Literature), and a subject (e.g. the literature on Cancer research). Today, the word 'literature' is also used to refer to printed materials such as leaflets and brochures.
