Sam: I'm turning off the TV.
Pat: Why?!
Sam: You're doing your homework. The TV is distracting you.
Pat: That's okay. I like to do both at the same time.
Sam: You'll probably get a C on your assignment because of the little mistakes you make while you're watching TV.

"We are much too traditional." (much too = very)
"That's too much food." (too much = intolerable, undesirable)

? We are undesirably traditional ?
? That's very much food ?

'Much too' is stronger. I'd use it to suggest that there is no way I'm going to to do anything.

In AE we would usually say small mistakes, meaning minor mistakes. A few mistakes means a small number of mistakes. (Not very many.) It's a difference between quality and quantity.

They are used in the same situations, but (as Tdol noted) much too tired is used for greater emphasis. Example:

• A: Can you help me move this big, heavy piece of furniture?
  B: I am much too tired for that.
