    Default look for something (for)

Do I need "for" in front of the time adverbial in the sentence below?

I was looking for my pen (for) about five minutes.

I think it sounds more natural with "for" but is it acceptable without it?
I'm not a teacher, or a native English speaker. Feel free to edit my posts if you encounter any mistakes in them (be it grammatical or vocabular). It'll help me to improve my command of English.

No, it's not acceptable without "for".
