Hello,
The following examples are all ways of asking for permission.
What are the differences between them ?
a.Do you mind if I smoke?
b.May I smoke here?
c.You don't mind if I smoke,do you?
d.Is smoking prmitted here?
e.Is it okay to smoke here?
which example seems to be :
1.Something you can say about official regulation?
2.What people say when they think it is all right to smoke?
3.Very polite -the kind of thing you say when you don't know the other person very well.
4.Not very formal but still polite?
5.Very informal?
Could anybody help me please ?![]()
Warm regards,
Rose

Do you know why these are the answers?
hi,
how come number three is the most polite one? as a smoke-hater , no.3 sound rahter irritating to me. the other person is expecting the stranger (me in this case) not to mind as if it is the normal answer to get.
Well, I'll try to answer your question according to my understanding !Originally Posted by tdol

Maybe because that the question begins with "do you mind".a.Do you mind if I smoke?
Something you can say about official regulation?
Maybe because of the word "may".b.May I smoke here?
What people say when they think it is all right to smoke
Maybe because that the question begins with "you don't mind"c.You don't mind if I smoke,do you?
Very polite -the kind of thing you say when you don't know the other person very well.
Maybe because we have the word "permitted".d.Is smoking prmitted here?
Not very formal but still polite
Maybe because that the question begins with "is it okay".e.Is it okay to smoke here?
Very informal
I don't think that my answes are exactly right, but would you ,tdol, let me know the perfect answers ,please !

Something has gone weird with my original post. This is what it should have read:
a 3
b 4
c 2
d 1
e 5
Thank god. I was really annoyed with option c.![]()
Thank you very much tdol !Originally Posted by tdol

But,can you tell me why ?!!![]()

a & b- requests that allow the person to say 'no'. Questions with 'mind' are more formal.
c- the question tag suggests that the person should say it's OK- it's not an open question like the previous two.
d- permit- this suggests regulation not permission
e- use of 'Okay' is casual
