I'm using the book "Writing to Learn: The Essay." On page 113-114, there is an excerpt titled "Conquering Everest." We are supposed to read the excerpt and underline the 5 relative clauses. I found 6. Is this right? I am using the book myself and the teacher's edition isn't for sale in my country. 1) Despite huge improvements in equipment in the last 20 years and the scores of climbers who make it to the summit each season, the highest mountain on earth should never be taken for granted. 2) At the summit there is only a third of the air found as sea level and violent storms can rake its upper slopes, trapping climbers in the 'death zone' above 26,000 feet where the body is literally starving for oxygen. 3) Specialists charge up to $70,000 for a place on one of the commerical expeditions which guide clients to the summit. 4) The romance and individualism of the early expeditions to Everest in the 1920's, when climbers wore Norfolk tweed jackets and puttees, seem a long way from the confident glitz of this modern era. 5) Most climbers who reach the summit of Everest rely on a great deal of help to get there. 6) Those who know Kropp, however, saw it as a typical piece of indivual determination, to do things his way or not at all. Are these all relative clauses?

Does it just say relative clauses or does it specify whether they should be defining (restrictive) or not? Number 4 is non-defining, which is why I asked.

Hi, The explanation before this one was talking about both restrictive and non-restrictive. This exercise just says, "Underline the five relative clauses and circle the relative pronouns." Thanks, S.C.

I'm sure they're not looking for #4.
