good day!
i'd like to ask which sentence is grammatically correct?
1. We wanted to go out yesterday but the weather the weather was appalling. If it had been a sunny day, we would have gone for a picnic.
or is this better
We wanted to go out yesterday but the weather was appalling. If were a sunny day, we would have gone for a picnic.
2. If I were you or If I had been you, I would have studied harder during the academic year. NOw it is too late.
which is right? If i were you or if i had been you?
thank you.
please enlighten me.
Just trying
1) Seems to be correct - had been...... would have
2) If I had been you, I would have studied harder during the academic year. Not it it too late. -
3rd conditional
1)used to express critisism/regret)
2) used for Imaginary past, with imagary present result.

I agree with #1, but with the second, we normally say 'If I were you, I would have...' because it seems illogical to say 'If I had been you', which implies that I wasn't you in the past, but could be you in the future. We can say 'If I had been in your position' as it doesn't have the same problem of logic.![]()
