    Default conditionals

    good day!
i'd like to ask which sentence is grammatically correct?
    1. We wanted to go out yesterday but the weather the weather was appalling. If it had been a sunny day, we would have gone for a picnic.
    or is this better

    2. If I were you or If I had been you, I would have studied harder during the academic year. NOw it is too late.
which is right? If i were you or if i had been you?

    thank you.
    please enlighten me.

    Just trying

    1) Seems to be correct - had been...... would have

    2) If I had been you, I would have studied harder during the academic year. Not it it too late. -

    3rd conditional

    1)used to express critisism/regret)

    2) used for Imaginary past, with imagary present result.

I agree with #1, but with the second, we normally say 'If I were you, I would have...' because it seems illogical to say 'If I had been you', which implies that I wasn't you in the past, but could be you in the future. We can say 'If I had been in your position' as it doesn't have the same problem of logic.
