Put out/ light

Can I use put out and light for any kind of flame , even the one that comes from the stove???

In that case I would prefer use "stub out".

You can 'put out' cigarettes, but this is often when asked to, rather than when you have finished smoking it, where I'd use 'stub out'. ;-)
