conservatory versus veranda(h)
Teachers,
Please give me your explanations of the words veranda(h) and conservatory.
To me a veranda is a kind of balcony, outside.
Some of my students refer to it as a room with glass walls and roof, to sit in and keep plants in. This, acording to my way my of thinking is a conservatory.
Please help. Thankyou.

I’d say that you are right. A veranda/verandah is open to the outside, whereas a conservatory is an enclosed room with a glass roof and/or walls.

A conservatory has walls, etc, but is not the same as a greenhouse\glasshose, as it is for people and not just plants. A veranda is open.

My initial thought is that a conservatory is where people go to get an education in music. Usually, the focus is on classical music and/or opera.
