| Would you please tell me the meaning of these sentences? 1)To fill in somebody. 2)Get even with somebody. 3)To be on the level. 4)Make a clean breast of something. 5)He is not all there. 6)Bite your tongue at the drop of a hat. Thanks in advance, |

If you bite your tongue you can't talk, so "to bite one's tongue" is to be silent, even though you really, really want to say something. For example, my wife might say something very stupid, and I might want to correct her -- but if she's already angry with me, it would be better to bite my tongue, otherwise she might want to get even with me. "At the drop of a hat" means suddenly, without preparation or thought. |
