which of the following is correct regarding people in a picture
1) are these really sam and nick
2) are those really sam and nick
3) is this really sam and nick

I'd say that all of them could be used. If the picture is near the speaker and the listener, then a) or c) make more sense to me. Some people might not like the use of the singular in c).
